JFTR although I can't help with regular Ubuntu maintenance, I fully support inclusion of FPM into Ubuntu main as the FCGI/FPM method is far more secure than standard libapache2-
I would even propose to demote libapache2-mod-php5 in favor of php5-fpm (if we can provide reasonably good default configuration with mod_proxy_fcgi in apache2.4).
