I can confirm this. The functionality was working in 11.04.

The alsa mixer controls are as below:

Simple mixer control 'Analog Output',0
  Capabilities: enum
  Items: 'Speakers' 'Headphones' 'FP Headphones'
  Item0: 'Speakers'
