Bug Description

Binary package hint: pavucontrol

Pavucontrol's window is determined dynamically to accomodate all controls, including stream labels. That can lead to window (much) larger that screen width, which makes it difficult to manipulate the controls (moving window left and right with alt-drag and such). The attached screenshot shows this -- it was combined from 2 screenshots, as the pertion beyond screen was not shot.

Proper solution would be to limit the width somehow and ellipsisize the stream name.

Running up-to-date karmic; pavucontrol 0.9.8+git20090701-0ubuntu2.

This affects me too, and it is really annoying. If I use a virtual simultanous output device of pulseaudio, pavucontrol gets wider than my screen. This is very annoying, but should be easy to fix. I think most of the users which will use simulatnous output will encounter this problem

I think this could be judged as being of medium importance, what do you think?

Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut should be a small usability issue, in the default Ubuntu install, that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug can't be addressed as part of this project.

- PAVU control is not part of the default install , hence not a papercut.
For further information about papercuts criteria, please read https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut.

Don't worry though, this bug has been marked as "Invalid" only in the papercuts project.

Screenshot of the problem

With my current setup pavucontrol's main window is unwieldily large, even on a 1920x1200 desktop.

  See the first screenshot.

This is a PITA for my endusers when adjusting which o/p to direct an application to.

With the attached patch you get the second screenshot. Not elegant I know, but at least the window now fits on the screen.
