According to http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Predesktop_Area, IBM used the so called Predesktop Area for reinstallation purposes before HPA. http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Rescue_and_Recovery: "As opposed to a Hidden Protected Area Recovery partitions are ordinary partitions, accessible through the partition table. As they are ordinary partitions they are accessible by ordinary partitioning tools."

Such a partition is not on my computer, if it were I would have wiped it. Actually, I swapped the HD when I got the X24 so there really should not be any kind of recovery partitions on this thing.
