The correct behavior would be to correctly handle the 301 redirect and maybe cache the location somewhere. For example; in my 301 redirect; it points to local-sn.contacts.msn.com (Singapore) instead of local-bay.contacts.msn.com (US, California).

The patch committed here is not correct, and will not work for some users (as has been reported for emesene). Please apply the following two patches:

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/papyon/commit/?id=ae863cd1e869a22f6b1bcfee93d4b801fd8e2200

Those patches will use redirection through omega.contacts.msn.com, which is a permanent solution that should work for everyone. The patch that has been released as an SRU is just a temporary solution using a hardcoded URL, which won't work for everyone.

I had resolved this problem in 11.10 a few days ago by manually updating the url in /usr/share/pyshared/papyon/service/description/AB/__init__.py from this:

url = "http://contacts.msn.com/abservice/abservice.asmx"

to this:

url = "http://local-sn.contacts.msn.com/abservice/abservice.asmx"

Many others on ubuntuforums.org suggested that the local-bay address worked for them:

url = "http://local-bay.contacts.msn.com/abservice/abservice.asmx"

However I tried this URL and was still unable to connect. Now that I am using the local-sn address everything is working fine. After I updated this morning (in update-manager) I found that I was unable to connect again and the URL in this file was changed back to the local-bay address. I can only assume the update changed the URL, but unfortunately it still does not work for me. As soon as I changed it to the local-sn address and restarted empathy my contacts loaded right up.

Is the URL somehow different by geography? I am in the USA and the local-bay address failed for both me and another individual in Canada. It seems to work fine for others throughout the world however. But I don't think this is quite solved yet since applying the update today actually broke empathy for me (only after I had manually fixed it, of course).
