This might be related to a bug which was fixed in PK 0.6.10 - I'll check this out when I'm back home.
Could you please run packagekitd in GDB?
$ sudo -s
$ killall packagekitd
$ gdb
$ file /usr/lib/packagekit/packagekitd
$ run
...and try fetching the package list again?
