Jeremy, if you get the prompt back immediately after the dpkg -l | awk '/^iH/ { print $2 }' command, that means dpkg thinks nothing is half-installed. This is good news; if you still have problems with:
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get -u dist-upgrade
then please paste the results you're getting.
