The new release as you said is almost all incorporating the patches, this is why should be harmless to merge.
A good reason for a merge is that we reduce a lot the debian delta, moreover there are two or three fixes in the debian packaging that might be useful to cherry-pick (restart services for example).
But I think we can merge after utopic, it is up to you ;)
