Could you please stop the server, start it up under manual control as root with '/usr/sbin/sshd -ddd' (yes, you do need the full path ...), attempt to connect to it with 'ssh -vvv', and attach the full debug logs from both client and server? This should give rather more information than is normally logged to auth.log.
