Did it actually fail or just display an ugly message? I am not sure how to correct the ugly message part regarding the following as it depends entirely on which version you are trying to upgrade from and the order of script execution and when the flies in the old packages disappear.

ERROR: Couldn't open registry file:///usr/lib/openoffice/basis3.1/program/offapi.rdb for reading
Exception details:
(com.sun.star.registry.InvalidRegistryException) { { Message = "Couldn't open registry file:///usr/lib/openoffice/basis3.1/program/offapi.rdb for reading", Context = (com.sun.star.uno.XInterface) @0 } }

unopkg failed.

It did actually fail. I had to abort the install and restart it due to unrelated X issues. You can see from my dpkg.log that later it did succeed:

dpkg.log:2010-04-06 11:00:01 upgrade openoffice.org-emailmerge 1:3.1.1-5ubuntu1.1 1:3.2.0-4ubuntu3
dpkg.log:2010-04-06 11:00:01 status half-configured openoffice.org-emailmerge 1:3.1.1-5ubuntu1.1

dpkg.log:2010-04-06 11:00:06 status half-installed openoffice.org-emailmerge 1:3.1.1-5ubuntu1.1

dpkg.log:2010-04-06 11:00:06 status unpacked openoffice.org-emailmerge 1:3.2.0-4ubuntu3

dpkg.log:2010-04-06 11:32:24 status half-configured openoffice.org-emailmerge 1:3.2.0-4ubuntu3
dpkg.log:2010-04-06 11:32:32 status installed openoffice.org-emailmerge 1:3.2.0-4ubuntu3

So I agree it's a sequencing issue, although I don't know what or why. Perhaps mvo could add a special cases in update-manager to make sure things go in the right order (whatever right is)?

Ok I will do some more testing to see if there is anything I can do short of mvo hacking update-manager.

However your original paste showed like it continued after all the warning/error messages.
