I think I found a workaround (thus not a solution) for GNOME/OOO:

System -> Preferences -> Font -> Subpixel Smoothing (LCDs)

or

... -> Font -> Details

Smoothing: Subpixel (LCDs)
Hinting: Full
Subpixel Order: RGB

(I'm using 98dpi at the moment).
