Binary package hint: openoffice.org
3D surface plot plots seem to take excessive time to redraw. (minutes instead of moments) they also are very slow to make the initial draw. I believe there is probaly some inefficient algorythm being used to project the 3D data onto the 2D plane for screen display.

3) What is expected to happen in LibreOffice Calc via the Terminal:

is the file opens quickly and successfully.
4) What happens instead is the 3D surface plot takes minutes to draw.
WORKAROUND: Use Gnumeric.
