4) What happens instead is the 3D surface plot takes minutes to draw.

WORKAROUND: Use Gnumeric.

Here is another spreadsheet with 3d graphs that is very slow to open and recalculate. It also shows that the 3d surface graph is being translated as a 3d column graph.
