Running slapd with debug output produces the following error message:

bdb_db_open: dc=mhelas,dc=home
bdb_db_open: dbenv_open(/var/lib/ldap)
bdb(dc=mhelas,dc=home): architecture lacks fast mutexes: applications
cannot be threaded
bdb_db_open: dbenv_open failed: Invalid argument (22)
backend_startup: bi_db_open(0) failed! (22)

So, it seems to be a libdb issue, as also concluded in
