Uargh, that's a lot of work for this. Thanks! Bug is known, please move
the ldabdb directory from /var/backups back to /var/lib/ldap:

   # /etc/init.d/slapd stop
   # rm /var/lib/ldap/*
   # cp -a /var/backups/*-2.3.23-1.ldapdb /var/lib/ldap/
   # /etc/init.d/slapd start

and you should be fine.
