We just upgraded from 10.04 to 12.04 and subsequently our nightly backup of ldap database reports the same error as this bug report.
Our backup script run from root's crontab is
/usr/sbin/slapcat -F /etc/ldap/slapd.d -l /root/system/ldap.ldif
the error reported is
51256a8a olcDbDirectory: value #0: invalid path: No such file or directory 51256a8a config error processing olcDatabase={2}hdb,cn=config: olcDbDirectory: value #0: invalid path: No such file or directory slapcat: bad configuration directory!
the database structure is
/var/lib/ldap /var/lib/ldap/accesslog
meanwhile
#slaptest -u config file testing succeeded
