In an attempt to make Eclipse load the library RXTXcomm.jar from the Ubuntu package librxtx-java, I discovered that /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/lib/amd64/server/libjvm.so (part of openJDK 6) only includes the hardcoded extension path /usr/java/packages/lib/ext. Yet, Java packages are installed into /usr/share/java, so they are subsequently not found by Eclipse.

Running Eclipse with a custom classpath is not straightforward, so I decided to create the aforementioned directory and symlink the .jar into it. This works but is not very user friendly.

As I see it, the path compiled into libjvm.so is wrong. It should point to the Debian/Ubuntu specific extension location instead. Is there a reason why java.ext.dirs must be /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/lib/ext:/usr/java/packages/lib/ext instead of /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/lib/ext:/usr/share/java?
