Is there a chance of this getting fixed anytime soon?

With Sun's java getting demoted from the main Ubuntu repository to the partners repository, and Ubuntu focusing on OpenJDK, it would be great to have the plugin working on AFS, NFS, and other home directories which don't support FIFOs or sockets.

An ideal solution would be creating the icedtea and gcj plugin data directories in /tmp somewhere, like GNOME and KDE do.

Failing that, honoring an environment variable like ICEDTEA_PLUGIN_DIR before falling back to ~/.icedteaplugin would be great.
