Have you spoken to upstream? It is really not a distributions package maintainer's job to actively develop the software, it is their job to make sure the existing package works in it's current form in the distribution. Everything I have read on this package openly states that it was developed on PPC FOR PPC.

Yes, you could argue that it's the maintainers job to work directly with upstream but upstream isn't always responsive.
