After experiencing this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ofono/+bug/1449990 I also noticed that when the phone silently switches from O2-DE to o2-de+ or vice versa, the data disappears, the symbol that appear is just the empty "angular" signal, if the screen is locked.
If the screen is unlocked then there is no problem, it goes with the other carrier and everything is fine.

The only way to have it back is to reboot, similarly to what happens here https://bugs.launchpad.net/canonical-devices-system-image/+bug/1435328 .
Also switching manually back to the other carrier does not make it come back.
