I tested the tip in this link to force Unity to start:

It did start but the launcher was a mess. I then deactivated nvidia-96 and activated nvidia-173 in stead, and now I have Unity working with Compiz effects. The slowness warned about in the link does not seem any intrusive so far. I might test nvidia-current again but will probably try running like this for a while and monitor the performance.
