I also noticed resolution problems when using my Dell Notebook with a port replicator / docking station.

I managed to get it right changing the gdm default start script - see http://it-tactics.blogspot.com/2010/08/ubuntu-1004-with-docking-station.html - maybe you can get a permanently working workaround using the information accordingly.
