Bug Description
Using up-to-date Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS, either recommended or post-updates drivers, the external HDMI display (HD TV) is detected and shown as connected in xrandr and the Nvidia Settings utility, yet there is no signal and the screen remains black.
I opened another bug for the same issue with nouveau drivers, bug #1073185.

Your system is not currently configured to drive a VGA console
on the primary VGA device. The NVIDIA Linux graphics driver
requires the use of a text-mode VGA console. Use of other console
drivers including, but not limited to, vesafb, may result in
corruption and stability problems, and is not supported.

I tested this setup after installing the updates from the xorg-edgers PPA, same results: /launchpad. net/~xorg- edgers/ +archive/ ppa

I also tested with Ubuntu 11.10 (looking at a possible regression and when it may have happened), same results.
The xorg log has several entries showing a problem with EDID:
