The issue here seems to stem from the Nvidia drivers. I'm reassigning this to the nvidia-graphics-drivers package for better visibility.

Also, just as an added note, I'm not familiar with any kernels being provided from the PPA you noted (ppa:upubuntu-com/kernel-amd64).
