Hi, I saw you updated the description with a workaround. This may work for most people, but it doesnt for the Lenovo W510 it seems ...
Using the nouveau breaks other things, e.g. CUDA and dual-monitoring. I can mirror the screen with the nouveau, but expanding the desktop to the second screen freezes the system. This works just fine with the nvidia driver. So it seems to be an issue with nouveau.
