Sory, xashyar, I never got this resolved. The nvidia bug https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/x-hangs-blocked-on-nvidia-modeset-in-ubuntu-22-02-nvidia-drivers-535/264035/6 devolved into "your laptop sucks" peacocking and i've just relegated the poor machine to windows-gaming-only duty.

I haven't tried anything linux on that machine since August of last year. (so maybe my particular problem has been fixed by something in the interval?)

My behavior doesn't look like what you describe in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-535/+bug/2071680, though. I *always* got a grub menu. The problem would always happen after grub. It looks like something in your issue also sometimes prevents grub from showing up?
