I have a proper ubuntu gnome session running with gdm, an external monitor and laptop panel, with prime sync on and no flickering, running 'ubuntu on xorg'

on my thinkpad W520 which is old but is a genuine Optimus laptop with Quadro graphics on the nvidia 387.34 binary driver
in Optimus mode.
Celebratory fireworks from me.
It seems to work. For ubuntu the only difference is
[Service] /usr/share/ gdm/generate- config
ExecStartPre=
becomes
[Service] /usr/bin/ xinit /usr/share/ gdm/generate- config
ExecStartPre=
