Running Ubuntu 18.10 here. Wanted to do a presentation with my Notebook, but it failed me cause of this bug.
I can confirm that it works "Out of the box" with lightdm and that it also works with gdm3 if you modify /lib/systemd/system/gdm3.service, changing the "ExecStartPre" line to the above mentioned: ExecStartPre=/usr/bin/xinit /usr/share/gdm/generate-config
