As per #32:
1 Purged all nvidia packages.
2 apt autoremoved, autocleaned.
3 Removed ppa:graphics-drivers (added for a previous attempt to fix this bug)
4 Apt update
5 Apt Installed nvidia-driver-390
6 Rebooted machine

Still no graphical login. ALso, strangely, no new or updated files in /var/crash.
