Bug Description

UPDATE Trying to install Mate 18.04 Beta 2 on ASUS FX530 notebook. Am using LiveCD USB drive (SanDisk). Have tried both install option and try without install option and both go to a screen that is so dim, you cannot see anything well enough to use the system. Contrast/Brightness do nothing. Currently running ver 17.10 with no issues.

Update. Did some digging and I guess this is a backlight problem. I'm runninge ASUS FX503 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050. I tried multiple options in isolinux grub (acpi_backlight=nivida, acpi_backlight=vendor, nvidia.modeset=0, nouveau.modeset=0) with no luck. Installed plain ubuntu and was able to get 18.04 installed (amd64) but it locked up at log in screen. Couldn't even bring up tty with ctrl-alt-F1,2,3, etc). So, Now I'm back with 16.04. Was still having problems so dropped to tty and did all the updates there including installing NVIDIA driver 396 and it's working perfectly. So, my guess is that the backlight is disabled somehow when installing/upgrading to 18.04. I wonder if it's a kernel issue as it caused isssues with ubuntu 18.04 as well. Hope this helps someone.
