Bug Description

With Nvidia binary drivers it freezes very often, with nouveau driver it freezes not very often. It has to do something with GPU as it happens only when using app that uses OpenGL.

dvdmchl, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. To see if this is already resolved, could you please test http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ and advise to the results?

I have used usb-creator-disk to make persistent Live USB form the ISO from:

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/

But was not able to boot from it, got boot error message. Have no other way to test it on my machine. Virtual machine would not help as I need to install nvidia drivers.

dvdmchl, is there either an xorg backtrace or kernel call trace to be captured following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSystemCrash ?

It happened twice today but there is no new file in /var/crash. It just freeze, nothing to capture.

dvdmchl, can you SSH into it and view the logs (specifically dmesg and xorg) from there?

This morning I switched to nouveau driver. So far my system works well without freezing.

So there are maybe some compatibility issues with binary nvidia driver.

So after over 24h running on nouveau drive I have got the freeze again.

I have tried to connect to it from other computer by SSH. But was not able to even ping the frozen one. The computer was completely irresponsible.

dvdmchl, to clarify my previous comment, can you SSH into it after it freezes (not before) and then view the logs (specifically dmesg and xorg) from there?

dvdmchl (dvd-mchl) wrote :

No I can't SSH into it. It doesn't even reply to ping when it freezes.

dvdmchl, fair enough. After you reboot from a crash, is there anything interesting in Xorg.0.log.old or dmesg.0?

I have dist-upgraded to Ubuntu 15.10, the problem still persists.

With Nvidia binary drivers it freezes very often, with nouveau driver it freezes not very often.

dvdmchl, given that you reported this problem while using the nvidia proprietary drivers, let this report be scoped to that, as nouveau drivers are treated as separately.

Hence, as per your logs, you were using the 304.x nvidia driver when you first reported. As per nvidia.com, the latest available is 340.93, which is available in Wily as per https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-340 . Hence, would testing a newer version of the driver change anything?

It did freeze on both 304 and 340 drivers. I was able to reproduce it by simple playing youtube video (HTML5 player ). It did then freeze in between 10-30min.

I have uninstalled Chromium a started to use Firefox instead. So far it is more stable and did not freeze after about 2h of playing videos.

So now I am near to blame Chromium browser with proprietary Nvidia driver installed that it causes freezing my system. It needs more testing though. And maybe if other people with the same problem can try to switch browsers.
