I also just had this happen same as comment #101 for 14.10 too, but on regular nvidia 331 non updates (tested) version too. (The default version of nvidia 331 under Additional Drivers that came when I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.10 a couple weeks ago.)

Same failed to build error message. Manually reinstalling nvidia-331 and nvidia-331-uvm solved the problem for me too.
