A LITTLE MORE INFO -

1) I tried to boot in recovery mode but I was unable to do so.

2) The problem is intermittent - I just rebooted and there are
no missing letters.

I've attached a screen shot as you asked.

I also would like to give you a little background:

I originally installed 14.04 as part of a dual boot
system with Windows 7 Professional as the other
part.   I then decided to go with 14.04 entirely,
so I used an install DVD I had burned.  After
installing, grub believs there is still a Windows
partition but there isn't one.

The missing letters problem also occurs
with all the icons on the top right of 14.04.

Please let me know how I can be of further
assistance.

ps- also, I tried to install the driver for the Broadcom
Wifi PCI card but so far no luck.
