Binary package hint: gnome-system-
I installed the nvidia graphics drivers. On restart no graphics appear, just sentences about the boot up process. Then it stalls.

It happens to me too. It took same time a bunch of re-installations to figured this out. This doesn't happen with version 173 of the driver.
