Same thing as mentioned when opening this bug report happened when updating today. At first reboot after updating, it only made it as far as to the console. Second time, it started in VESA mode. I have been getting this error message for a couple of days: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xkeyboard-config/+bug/67188. Maybe this is related?
