a temporary fix to this problem that worked for me is to install UNITY 2D from the repositories. using unity 2d does not use the accelerated features of the graphics card. it looks exactly like unity 3d and also runs faster.

1. install unity 2d is in the repositories (synaptic package manager)

2. after installing you should restart your computer.

3. at the login window, select your account. you may have to switch the interface from ubuntu to unity 2d in the menu at the bottom of the screen in the login window AFTER you click on your account name.

4. your computer should boot to unity 2d. you will loose all accelerated 3d graphics - bad for gaming - but it makes the computer work for general purposes.
