my experience:

geoforce fx 5200 - computer boots to white screen. restarting, and pressing esc key repeatedly gets me to the loin menu. must start in gnome classic mode to login. logging in with unity goes to blank white screen.

additional drivers indicates nvidia accelerated graphics driver (version 173) [recommended]

but

indicates driver is activated but not currently in use.
