Same problem here using a Nvidia Quadro FX 880M card.
"Driver is activated but not currently in use."
Using glxgears, it said it did about 4000 fps on the command line but on the display the gears are only moving at about 1 frame every 5 seconds. glxinfo states direct rendering is enabled.
