I agree with the need to be more user-friendly with this situation - if it arises could the user be prompted (if they want to be, or execute the user-specified default action) to select from:
1. Don't mount the disk
2. Mount the disk as read-only
3. Run ntfsfix and mount the disk as read/write
4. Mount the disk as read/write anyway (=force)
