I'm having a similar problem. I have to manually click on the "wired network" option on the networking applet (double-monitor icon) to get my AT&T DSL internet to get recognized. This was not a problem with the previous release of Ubuntu, only Feisty. I hope this gets fixed soon! My wired connection is set for dhcp.
