The commit mentioned in comment #4 is now available in the upstream 3.0.16 kernel and subsequent 3.0.x kernels.

usb: option: Add Huawei E398 controlling interfaces

This patch adds the controlling interfaces for the Huawei E398.

Thanks to Bjørn Mork for extracting the interface
numbers from the windows driver.
