I'd rather we wait to see what decision will be taken upstream to fix this.
AFAICT, preferring IPv6 makes sense whereas IPv6-supporting (e.g. any responding over IPv6 ought to) DNS servers should be able to respond with both A and AAAA records, whereas DNS servers that are only capable of doing IPv4 would probably only respond with A records. What this means is that for domains that have no IPv6, my guess is that they are more likely to timeout and fallback to the next (ipv4) nameserver than error out with a NXDOMAIN for requests for AAAA records.
