after an dist-upgrade from hardy to intrepid ibex i had the same problems. After studying some googlehits and bugreports I found a solution that seems to work for me:
1: removed all network manager * (core, gnome, kde) 2: removed wpa_supplicant 3: installed ubuntu_desktop
-NM and wpa_supplicant are interfering each other. -To have it clean either install gnome or kde NM.
