I don't see the exact error message you refer to on my laptop, but I think it may be related. See the attached log excerpt - I still get more or less that very same sequence of messages when this occur. For some silly reason NM seems to want to blacklist my AP immediately after every scan request.

I would definitely be interested in trying your patch if it comes to that. Are you doing it against the current NM version in Ubuntu?
