Regarding the package versions problem: You can always decide which version of a package you want to install. To do this in Synaptic you click on the package you want to install, then you choose "force version" from the menu "Package" (or press Ctrl+E) and choose what you want to have. On the command line you list your available options by typing:

#> apt-cache policy network-manager

Then you choose which version you want to install and do so by typing

#> apt-get -f install network-manager=x.y.z-ubuntuN <--- preferred version as reported by above cmd
for example
#> apt-get -f install network-manager=0.6.4-6ubuntu3f

As I already mentioned I dont have time to keep up with ubuntu release cycles. I'll release an update whenever the package will break for me (e.g. must be updated because it keeps other software from installing or running properly).
