Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

In Ubuntu 10.04 my wireless connection is dropping randomly. It happens more often when transferring files (either over LAN or the internet) but also happens when just surfing web pages or when idle at the desktop.

I have tried kernels 2.6.32, .33 and .34 in Lucid but this issue happens with the same frequency. I tried Fedora Core 13 and the same problem happened but after an upgrade to NetworkManager this issue was resolved and there were no more dropped connections. A working working version is NetworkManager-0.8.1-0.1.git20100510.fc13.i686.rpm

Hardware: Acer Aspire One ZG5 Netbook
Ubuntu version: 10.04 32 bit
network-manager version: 0.8-0ubuntu3

wireless card: 03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)

I almost forgot, the connection is usually able to re-establish itself but sometimes I have to tell network-manager to disconnect, wait a few seconds and then try the connection again

Hi. I've got exactly the same problem, but I don't think this is limited to Ubuntu. I'm running 10.04 now, but had the RC of Windows 7 running previously, and that had the same issues...as you point out, it seems to occur mainly (although not exclusively) when large files are being transferred.
We have two Aspire Ones in the house, the other machine has the original custom OS installed, and doesn't seem to suffer from this problem, so wondering if it's an issue with a proprietary driver or something?

Hi, could you please try using a manually assigned IP address instead of dhcp and see if it helps with your issue?

Hi Igor

I tried this yesterday, albeit briefly, and can (so far) confirm that this appears to have helped...I managed to update Ubuntu using the update manager without interruption, which previously would have forced the wireless to disconnect prematurely.

I'll keep monitoring it and update as necessary.

Thanks

RC

I am seeing the exact same issue: random disconnects in an Aspire One ZG5.

Is this related to https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13892 ?

For testing purposes, I am trying to download ubuntu's iso.

As Igor suggested, I tried manually assigning the IP address but I still get random disconnects while downloading the file.

I attach the syslog at the time of disconnect, where you can see:

wlan0: deauthenticated from 00:1e:e5:7a:44:60 (Reason: 14)

Influeced by the original poster, I have also tried a more recent networkmanager (the https://launchpad.net/~network-manager/+archive/trunk PPA), but without any luck.

I'm having the same issue on Ubuntu 10.04 on a Toshiba Portege R705. It happens when I transfer data through the network (eg, backing up my computer), while I'm surfing the net, and while it is idle. It occurs quite frequently actually, a few times a day. It happens during data transfer for sure. Here is what happened (dmesg) while I used rsync:

hank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Maverick Meerkat. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

If it is related to this (which I think it is), I have tested on maverick beta. And it still has the same issue.
