NetworkManager does not configure mobile broadband -- Huawei E122

UK mobile broadband 3 Internet have started shipping the Huawei E122 as a replacement for the E220. The E220 works perfectly with 9.10 'out of the box'.

Attempting to connect fails with the following in syslog:

I don't know if this is relevant, but lsusb identifies the device incorrectly as:

I have exactly the same issue

My Kernel is 2.6.31-19-generic x86_64 GNU/Linux

Please resolve this issue as soon as possible, as I was doing so well at convincing people to change to ubuntu, but now have 3 of those asking me to reinstalll Windows

I have the same problems (also in detail) with my E122 and 9.10 Ubuntu (with all Updates in and Kernel 2.6.31-19-generic on an emachines laptop)

Some customers of me will have the same problem, they have not used their modem yet. but on my last visit I have testet und same problems also.... so ist only a question of time when 6 computers have this problem too

please correction is needed

I had this problem too. But with a self compiled 2.6.32.8 vanilla kernel this E122 stick is shown with 'lsusb' as
'Bus 001 Device 008: ID 12d1:1001 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E620 USB Modem'
and it works (also with the NetworkManager).

I have testet on an Acer Apire One (110L first charge) with Ubuntu 9.10 2.6.31-19

lsusb shows - Bus 002 Device 005: ID 12d1:1001 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E620 USB Modem - does not work. like the others. And - I'm not good in compiling kernel... ;)

I have the HUAWEI e122-2 modem,,,,I managed to get it connected and up and running yesterday, but I haven't been able to get it to connect today. It is a real pain. I use the danish mobile net provider called Oister.

I installed the linux drivers found inside the key, but it is a real pain.

now i have the same problem on 5 laptops....

the only stick that works is e160 with slow connection - all of the huawei high speed sticks dont working well...
update is needed very urgent - some customer will use windows because of this problem on ubuntu.... its not so fine

The good news is that this E122 works perfektly in ubuntu 10.04 beta. meaning that there is hope.

the bad news is that i really cant get it to work in 9.04 or 9.10 eather.

in 1½ month the solution therefore would be til recoment to update to ubuntu 10.04 lts but since this is still a beta i dont want to do so on anyother than my test computer

In case someone has the same problem as me -->

I had the same problem and followed soundpartners advice (#11) and upgraded to 10.4 beta, then the usb dongle wouldn't init properly (was registered as a mass storage device).

I got it sorted by running usb_modeswitch (usb_modeswitch -v 0x12d1 -p 0x1446 -H).

Now it's working, and I have a brand new Ubuntu version :)

Hi All,

I have the same problem, I have a Dell Vostro 1000 and tried connecting through "3" Ireland with the E122 modem. I got this modem as an upgrade to the E220 on the "3" broadband network here in Ireland. I'm nearly out of space on my machine and doubt if I can upgrade to 10.4 beta as I have no room, I've tried running the Windows 3Connect software that came on the upgrade stick ( the E122) through WINE to get around this problem, but it's just stuck initializing, do you think that running usb_modeswitch in a terminal window might be able to get this to work? I already did the lsusb command and it recognized that this was a Hauwei usb device.

Surely there must be another option out there besides upgrading to 10.4 beta, I really don't want to go back to Windows at all ever again frankly, but stuck using it to write this message.

Thanks again for any help, need to get off Windows very fast for my own sanity

I've upgraded to 10.04 and the modem now works perfectly (it also "feels" a lot faster than the old E220). However, I did have to sudo apt-get install usb-modeswitch libusb-dev and reboot before it would work.

I'd close this bug as 'fixed' if I could work out how to :-)

Agree with John's comments. Am running 10.04 (64-Bit) including latest patches.

Followed John's instructions, installing usb-modeswitch and libusb-dev then rebooted.

sudo apt-get install usb-modeswitch libusb-dev"

Its working now on.

Yes 'sudo apt-get install usb-modeswitch libusb-dev' and a reboot is all you need to get the E122 (and possibly some other modems) to work.
So it works very well yes... but there's some functionality that I would love to see.
1. A signal strength indicator
2. A connection type indicator (GPRS, 3G or HSDPA)
3. Total bandwidth consumed per month (although I get this by using KNemo at the moment)

Anyone knows of a program that would do this?

There is the Vodafone Mobile Connect but I would like something more 'generic' or even specific for any Huawei modem.

I just upgraded and now I can't use the internet without going to a library or coffee shop, some 12 miles or more away. This is the only way I can access the internet from home!! Please fix it.

I don't think it's broken, you just need to install a couple of packets...
Have you tried to run:
sudo apt-get install usb-modeswitch libusb-dev
from a terminal?

Had a similar issue with a Huawei E122. That is, installing usb-modeswitch fixed my problem as well.

But, mine occurred during an upgrade from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. To clarify, my E122 worked perfectly before the automatic upgrade, but after running it, network manager couldn't detect it, no ppp device appeared but lsusb was still listing it, although as a Mass Storage interface (as you might guess). I presume this is what "Womble" was talking about... but who knows.

I cannot tell you whether usb-modeswitch was uninstalled during this process, but only because I don't know where to look - I would be really happy to provide any log file I'm requested for.

Interestingly, immediately after the upgrade, everything worked fine, it was only after I rebooted, again, later that things failed - although I realise how silly that sounds so maybe my recollection is false, but that's how I remember it :)

For the sake of >20k, perhaps these files should be included as a mandatory part of the upgrade? At least for people with mobile broadband settings? In situations like mine (and I presume Wombles :) my 3G modem is my ONLY source of internet access. If it fails during upgrades, even to figure out what is going wrong using Google, means I have to annoy other people, go to their houses and borrow their connections - let alone when the fix is to download more packages :)

And I realise this has little to do with network-manager, just hope you can pass this on to more appropriate people for me.

Looking at upstream's website:

I see that the E220 is listed as known to work but the E122 not.

Please file a bug report upstream

    https://bugzilla.gnome.org/browse.cgi?product=NetworkManager

asking for the E122 to be supported.

i have used huawei E303C modem ,when i tried to install NDS modem driver it fails and the network manager do not identify the modem , i have tried lsusb in it, it detected the modem but the network manager do not identify the modem.After it ubuntu error reporting window appears in it its shows the path it is the modem manager after some time the O.S stuck. Please help me to solve the problem.Is any modem manager application is available to perform the operation...?
