Upon startup, doing ps aux| grep nfs yields:

root 876 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? S< 23:39 0:00 [nfsiod]
root 1988 0.0 0.0 1748 580 ? S 23:39 0:00 /bin/sh /etc/rc2.d/S20nfs-kernel-server start
root 2004 0.0 0.0 1712 592 ? D 23:39 0:00 /usr/sbin/rpc.nfsd 8

Which indicates the startup script is hanging...
