I have the same problem here. With a Huawei USB 3G modem too.
I will also add that nm-applet is always taking 30% of the CPU resources and that somehow this applet is always creating hundred of files in the background because my file system is always full. Even if i free up 200MO, 10 seconds latter, these space is taken by nm-applet.
