A temporary workaround for avoiding those annoyning disconnecting sessions is to run wpa_cli:

$ sudo wpa_cli

and issue the command ap_scan 0

> ap_scan 0

This will tell wpa_supplicant to stop scan. I tried to enter this into the /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf but nothing seems to happen.
